Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah in the United States is a performer and actress. Queen Latifah is an American actress, rapper and performer. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot and Rita Owens. They were both members of the police force. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who worked the class at Irvington High School. Latifah's parents divorced when she was 10 years old. Latifah was raised within the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Latifah is an Arabic term that translates to "delicate and kind". Her cousin granted it to her when she was eight. Latifah has always been tall, standing 5'10" She was a strong forward for her high school basketball team. She performed the hit song home from The Wiz at a high-school play. Latifah was the first to begin beatboxing with the Ladies Fresh. Latifah became part of the Flavor Unit in its original model, consisting of a team of MCs and DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was interested by the track. The singer signed Latifah, and released her debut single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
